User Persona and Journey 2

For the second user persona, we looked at a part-time employee' Emily. The idea here was to see what kind of features and connectivity a member of staff would need to engage with their job more efficiently, as well as a look at how they go about their job.

Emily is a student, therefore works in a part-time job. As she is quite young, she has a good knowledge of technology, and more importantly a mobile phone. This helps us because we feel that she could pick up the app very quickly and learn how to use it with ease. When looking at how she goes about her job, we find that she needs to be able to communicate with other staff members to ask about any shifts or shift swapping. She would also like to be able to view her current wage and previous payslips, as well as what shifts she has coming up. Other features such as an on-the-go app and the ability to let her manager know her shift availability.

When looking at the journey for Emily, we chose to see how she would interact with work. She begins her journey quite pleased and optimistic, starting a new job. She then begins to get quite anxious and worried when checking her shifts. She then finds out that she can't work which makes stressed. She now has to try and swap her shift. She then finds someone to swap her shift, but then still needs her manager to confirm it, leaving her a bit worried. Further on her journey, Emily needs to let her manager know about her availability as well as letting her manager know she would like to work more hours. From all of this, she is anxious, waiting for a response. After speaking with the manager, she feels a lot more comfortable and pleased with her hours. Finally, she wants to know how much she'll earn this month, so Emily works it out on the calculator on her phone. This a quite a long winded and boring process for her.

From the journey, we found a lot of opportunities for us when thinking of the structure and functionality of our app. For example, shift swapping is a big thing, especially for part-time staff. A lot of people struggle to get in contact with other staff to be able to actually swap some shifts. For us, we would need a way to shift swap with other staff members, as well as a way of communicating with other staff and managers. Additionally, a function where the member of staff can see their current wage would be a big help, especially younger staff members who need to budget.

From this user persona, it clicked that we would need to consider looking at having a separate app for staff, and another app for managers. This was due to the kinds of features that would be put on the staff app.
